The Commencement

Really, the season started on Thursday but like baseball, the first few games they play in Japan don't count. It's that first cluster of games that's really considered "opening day," or in the NCAA's case "opening weekend."

The first weekend is already filled with some big non-conference games that will decide a lot. But for those top 25 teams that lose today, remember that it's better to lose in the beginning. Also remember that how LSU got to the title game in 2007 season isn't going to happen to you, it just won't.

The most intriguing match up this Saturday has to be the match up between number five Alabama and number seven Virginia Tech. Will Nick Saban finally be able to push the Tide to the title game? Will Virginia Tech somehow prove that they're not overrated for once, and actually deserved the top ten preseason ranking? Will Brigham Young be the East Carolina this year and dismantle Oklahoma in the first game of the season?

Parity is often what makes college sports so great and the opening weekend has the potential for quite a bit.
